Our Story
Mothers Against School Shootings
"If you want something done, do it yourself."
According to a recent publication, there were 42 school shootings in 2021. Forty. Two. In one year. The federal government does not track school shootings. We have an entire Department of Education, yet the government of the United States does not put in one single iota of effort to combat this issue. What is one phrase that moms repeat to themselves again and again? "If you want something done, do it yourself." That is EXACTLY what I, what WE, intend to do. Starting now.
According to the same publication, more than a quarter of a million students in this country, a quarter of a million of our babies, have experienced gun violence in the United States since that terrible day at Columbine in 1999. And I say our babies because you know as well as I do that no matter how old they are they are still our babies. The number is truly staggering. Over 311,000. Students shouldn't simply feel safe in our schools. They should BE safe. And Moms of America, WE can help to ensure that that happens.
There are two very, very simple solutions to this problem. And that is what we need — simple solutions, because the need is great and the situation is a matter of life and death and we can't waste our time fighting unending battles.
Goal One
One locked, monitored entrance during school hours.
Schools should have multiple modes of egress for students in case of a fire or emergency. HOWEVER, during school hours, schools must have only ONE entrance into the building that is LOCKED, and that entry should be equipped with either a security guard or police officer. Common sense. Simple.
MASS will use the money raised to make this happen.
Goal Two
Metal detectors in every school — every district.
Once our first goal is reached, our next task is to help equip every single school in this country with metal detectors. Every wealthy district. Every poor district.
"I've policed two types of schools. Those with metal detectors and those without. Thirty years ago, I'd go into any school and would constantly have to be on guard, looking for a bulge in a pocket as a sign of a weapon. Metal detectors changed things… I would definitely advocate for it."
As do I. It is a simple, commonsensical solution.
Moms (and Dads and Cousins and Aunts, Uncles and rightly concerned Supporters), we can do this. MASS can do this. And I absolutely love that it is starting right here in Massachusetts. We're smart. We're tenacious. We're tough. The Battle of Bunker Hill proved we can take a beating and still emerge victorious. The Boston Tea Party showed that we're not afraid to stand up to injustice. Our children, ALL children, deserve to truly be safe at school. I can't do it alone, but together we absolutely can.
Our Vision
Our Children. Our Future. Our Obligation.
To protect our children and ensure the safety of students by making every school in America secure — with MASS supporters in every single community helping to ensure our goals are attained.
Life. Liberty. And the Safe Pursuit of Education.
